CEBRAD Focuses On Beekeeping As Wealth Creator, Holds Conference By Fabian Odum on October 18, 2015 4:13 am

the Centre for Bee Research & Development(CEBRAD), is organising a three-day conference.
The determination to seek alternative income
sources for Nigeria is on the upswing as the
searchlight turns to apiculture, the business of
beekeeping and honey production as well as
other by-products.
In this wise, the Centre for Bee Research &
Development (CEBRAD), is organising a three-day
conference for key players in the apicultural
business under the theme, ‘Maximizing
Apicultural Potentials as a Way Forward to Oil
Dependent Economy in Nigeria.’
The conference, the second Biennial Nigerian
Beekeeping Conference – NIBEECON 2015- is
aimed at providing updates of advances in all
aspects of beekeeping and develop strategies for
reaping success from this industry in the areas of
dissemination of research findings, latest
beekeeping technology, globalisation and trade
issues as a better alternative to monolithic oil
dependent economy. The event is scheduled for
9-12 November, 2015 at Brymor Hotels Ltd, Ilobu
Road, Osogbo, capital of Osun State.
In a release, Mr. Bidemi Ojeleye, director of the
Centre, said the conference is a major event in
the beekeeping calendar and the nation’s biggest
national beekeeping event because it will attract
people from the hobbyist to the commercial
beekeepers, MDAs relevant to beekeeping and
economic activities of the nation, development
programs workers, trainers and extension
workers as well as parkers of beekeeping
products, equipment fabricators, apitherapists,
entomologists and academics, farmers,
journalists, students and other interested
members of the public.
About 150 participants from within the country
will attend, while more than 30 scientific papers
from the Academia, Research Institutes and
industries; about 20 symposia papers will be
delivered during the three-day event, he said.
According to Ojeleye, the theme for this year’s
conference was informed by the present
economic doldrums facing the nation, which has
grossly contributed to the reduction in gross
domestic products (GDP), thereby exposing about
70 per cent Nigerians to be living below poverty
level.
The beekeeper expert explained that in
recognition of selfless service to nature and
humanity, NIBEECON 2015 Awards of Excellence
would also be given to deserving individuals,
groups and MDAs.
He said the conference is open to people wanting
to learn more about bee health, beekeeping,
native bees, beekeeping value additions and those
wanting to use beekeeping for wealth creation.
The event will be chaired by Aare Afe Babalola,
founder of Afe Babalola University, who will also
deliver the keynote address, while the Executive
Governor of Osun State, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola
will be the chief host.
Other eminent personalities expected include the
Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of
Industry, Trade & Investment, Dr. Hussaini Doko
Ibrahim, Director General, Raw Materials
Research & Development Council and many
more.
The conference is supported by the Federal
Ministry of Industry, Trade & Investment, Raw
Materials Research & Development Council,
National Board for Technology Incubation,
Nigerian Export Promotion Council, National
Institute for Oil-palm Research, Nigerian National
Park Service and the Government of State of
Osun.
