Emenike: Chukwu, Nwosu differ OCTOBER 23, 2015 : ARUKAINO UMUKORO

Emmanuel Emenike
Former
Nigeria
internationals,
Christian
Chukwu
and
Henry
Nwosu,
have
differed
on
the
choice
of a
replacement
for retired Super Eagles forward, Emmanuel Emenike.
Emenike retired from international football on Monday after
posting his decision on Instagram.
Reactions have since greeted his retirement, with some ex-
internationals calling for the invitation of Olympiakos forward,
Brown Ideye, and Seattle Sounders striker, Obafemi Martins, to
replace the former Russia-based forward. But Chukwu and
Nwosu, who both spoke with one of our correspondents on the
telephone on Thursday, differed on the issue.
Chukwu said there was no need to invite overseas-based
forwards as the domestic league had good strikers to replace
Emenike. Nwosu believes Nigeria coach Sunday Oliseh should
invite both domestic and overseas-based players to compete for
the position in the team.
Former Green Eagles captain, Chukwu, said, “The Eagles should
play more friendly matches for the home-based players to gain
experience and exposure.
“We do not need another overseas-based player in the striking
position to replace Emenike. The strikers in the team have
shown a lot of promise and will do better than they are doing
now if given more time and matches.
“What Oliseh needs to do is to look at the other areas that need
strengthening in the team and invite a few overseas-based
players to fill them, but not in the striking department. If the
team is exposed and left together for a longer period, the
overseas-based payers will be the ones begging to play for
Nigeria rather than the country begging them.”
Nwosu said, “Oliseh should invite strikers from the local and
foreign leagues to compete for the striking role. The player who
retired has some qualities, which made the coach invite him in
the first instance, despite not scoring for the Eagles for a long
time.
“These qualities may not be found on the local scene and may
be seen in the overseas-based players. The replacement for
Emenike may come from either the local league or the overseas-
based professionals.”
And on Thursday in Abuja, the Nigeria Football Federation
announced that Oliseh had returned to Belgium after reporting to
work sick.
The NFF said via their Twitter, “Coach Oliseh has returned to
Belgium to continue treatment after being advised by the Eagles’
medics. He became dizzy and weak after lunch on Thursday.”
The development means that Oliseh will not be on the bench
when the Eagles take on Burkina Faso on Sunday in the second
match of the qualifier for the 2016 Championship for African
Nations. The former Nigeria captain reportedly took ill soon after
Nigeria defeated Cameroon 3-0 in a friendly match in Brussels.
He was initially not expected for the match against the
Burkinabe in Port Harcourt but he arrived at the camp barely 24
hours to the match.
In his absence, Salisu Yusuf will take charge of the team in
Ouagadougou on Sunday.
