Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel
Youths of Oro ethnic nationality in Akwa Ibom State have
disagreed with Akwa Ibom State governor, Mr. c, over his
comment on the reappointment of Mr. Joshua Okpo as Rector of
the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron.
The youths, who spoke on the platform of the Coalition of Oro
Nation Community Youth Leaders, berated Emmanuel for saying
that President Muhammadu Buhari took a wrong step by
extending Okpo’s tenure instead of upgrading the institution to a
university.
The acting President of the body, Mr. Usuyak Atting, who said
this in Oron on Sunday, maintained that Emmanuel lacked the
knowledge about the running of the institution.
He added that by the statement, Emmanuel was pretending to
show concern for an ethnic nationality.
He noted that Oro had suffered eight years of hardship, pains,
marginalisation and gross injustice during the last
administration of Mr. Godswill Akpabio.
According to him, Buhari, by reappointing Okpo as the rector of
the academy, has done what is right for the Oro ethnic
nationality, considering the dynamics involved in running
maritime institutions worldwide.
He said, “Emmanuel does not only lack the knowledge and idea
about the dynamics and technicality of the Maritime Academy of
Nigeria, Oron, but he also pretends to show concern about the
development of an ethnic nationality that has suffered
unprecedented marginalisation.
“We have benefitted from the leadership of the Okpo-led
administration via the provision of corporate social
responsibility to the host community by sending youths for
training in various self-reliant skills.”
