RENOWNED Professor of Economics at the
University of Calabar and Marxist, Prof. Eskor
Toyo is dead.
He died at about 7.30 p.m on Monday at the
University of Calabar Teaching Hospital. Toyo
had suffered from series of strokes for the past
two years before he finally died at the age of 85.
A comrade, Dr. Edwin Madunagu and his wife
who were with him at his last moment, lamented
the departure of a revolutionary, socialist and a
profound intellectual.
Madunagu said, “Prof. Eskor Toyo, belonged to a
biological family but his primary family was the
working people of Nigeria and the masses.
During the course of his struggle for the
oppressed, he suffered series of strokes that lead
to his untimely death.
“Everybody who dies will be leaving his family
behind, but beyond his family and constituencies
is the Socialist National Movement, a constituent
that has lost a giant,” he agonized.
Before his death Prof. Eskor Toyo was a member
of ASUU Trustees and a leading member of the
Socialist Patriots of Nigeria (SPN).
