NAF advocates synergy between military and media in the fight against terrorism

From ROSE EJEMBI, Makurdi.
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has stressed the need for
collaboration between the media and the military warning
that revealing intelligence gathering through media content
could jeopardise progress in the ongoing fight against
terrorism.
Command Training Officer of the NAF Headquarters
Training Command, Abuja, Air Commodore, Edward
Akintunde Johnson, gave the warning during the joint
graduation ceremony of young officers, intelligence
supervisors and Basic intelligence courses at the Nigerian
Airforce School of Air Intelligence (NAFSAINT), Makurdi
recently.
Johnson who was Guest of Honour at the graduation
ceremony posited further that the media had been part of
intelligence gathering for a long time and it should strive
not to deviate from the norm in the face of current digital
attacks which was why the synergy was necessary so as
not to thwart the effort being made in intelligence
gathering.
Earlier, Commandant of the institution, Group Capt.
Raymond Nwankwo who disclosed that 62 personnel who
were graduating were now ready to be exported to crisis
prone areas of the country to combat insurgency
described the current act of terrorism bedevilling the north
east of the country as, “a cancer that can penetrate
intelligence network.”
He added that failure in intelligence arises when the
personnel are poorly equipped to beat the current
terrorism threatening insecurity in the country and
constituting serious impediment to human liberty much as
it poses a mixture of uncertainty and instability to national,
regional and international peace.
According to Nwankwo, the need for regular training of the
Nigerian Airforce personnel cannot be overemphasised in
a bid to permanently defeat Boko haram because
successive terrorist activities carried out so far in Nigeria
indicated seemingly poor intelligence network.
