BIAFRAN loyalists, who were mostly traders yesterday,
staged a peaceful protest at the Alaba International
Market in Ojo Local Area of Lagos, shutting down shops
and restricting vehicular movements in the area.
The Biafran supporters demanded the unconditional
dismissal of the case against Director of Radio Biafra, Mr.
Nnamdi Kanu.
Few hours into the protest, the agitators were said to have
called off the protest when the news of discharge of the
case against him before a magistrate Court in Abuja
filtered in.
The protest took place a day after the Lagos State chapter
of the All Progressives Congress (APC) warned members
of the movement not to stage any protest in Lagos. The
party warned that MASSOB and IPOB against plunging
Lagos into crisis.
IPOB earlier planned to hold its rally along the Alaba
International Market axis, as well as visit several
embassies and high commissions, Amnesty International
and United Nations (UN) offices, in Victoria Island and
Ikoyi axis of Lagos, to deliver protest letters.
One of the protesters, identified only as Ubah, told Daily
Sun that the protest started in the morning, and ended
around 1.00 pm, when news filtered in that the case
against the director had been struck out.
“We are law-abiding citizens of Nigeria and we also have
the right to protest when the need arises.”
It was gathered that policemen from the Ojo, Ajangbadi,
and FESTAC Area E Command were with the protesters to
ensure it did not turn violent.
